Shanghai has surpassed London in the ranking of world shipping centers 🇨🇳🚢
At the end of 2025, Shanghai rose to second place for the first time in the International Shipping Center Development Index (Xinhua-Baltic ISCDI, report in English), which is jointly compiled by the China Economic Information Service and the Asian branch of the Baltic Exchange (commodity and freight exchange). Having overtaken London, Shanghai was second only to Singapore, which has maintained its leadership for 13 years in a row.
The index evaluates three key categories: port conditions, shipping services and integrated environment. It is in the last two components that Shanghai has shown the most significant progress.

🔹 Since the introduction of the index in 2014, Shanghai has risen from 7th place to 2nd - the best result in the entire history of the index.
📦 Container turnover of the port of Shanghai in 2025 exceeded 55.06 million TEU (+6.9%) - a new record. For the 16th year in a row, the port remains the busiest in the world
🔍 What is the secret of success? Shanghai's success lies not only in the fact of growing cargo turnover. Behind it lies a mature marine ecosystem including: – shipping companies and ship brokers; – financial institutions and insurers; – law firms and shipyards; – suppliers of digital and “green” technologies. Years of investment in digitalization of port operations, automation and environmental standards have strengthened the city's global position.
🇨🇳 Seven Chinese ports entered the top 20 of the ranking, which demonstrates a steady trend of expanding and strengthening China’s presence in international logistics. In addition to Shanghai and Hong Kong, Ningbo-Zhoushan (6th place) is also in the top ten. Guangzhou, Qingdao and Tianjin also noticeably improved their positions.
