P.S. A characteristic feature of Athonite hagiology is that many saints are venerated on the day immediately following their death, as well as on this conciliar day. The Council of Athos Saints is often called the “Cathedral of all saints who shone on Athos.” It is believed that the Mother of God invisibly rules Athos, being its Abbess. Therefore, on Mount Athos there are no patriarchal or bishop's awards - bishops here do not wear bishop's vestments, there is not a single nunnery on Mount, and the gates of all monasteries are locked at night. Also, handshakes are not accepted on Athos - the brethren greet each other with a bow with the words “Bless.” Today's holiday is a day of spiritual celebration and an example to follow for all who seek the path to God through prayer and purity of heart.
